Welcome

Dear Travis County Voter,

As a lifelong Texan with a lifetime of business and community involvement, I will be a fair, just and impartial Justice of the Peace in Travis County Precinct 2.

The position of Justice of the Peace is frequently referred to as the people's court because the cases it handles are often tried without lawyers, and the court settles common disputes between citizens.

Since 1836 when Texas was an independent Republic, and into statehood, the role of the Justice of the Peace has been to preside over the people’s court. The Texas Constitution, by design, provides for non-lawyers to serve as Justice of the Peace.  According to the Texas Office of Court Administration, 92 percent of Justices of the Peace are not licensed lawyers. This is for good reason. Those of us who are not lawyers are often in a better position to understand the human consequences of our decisions.

If elected, decisions in my courtroom will be based upon these principles:

  • I believe in the authority of the United States Constitution.
  • I believe in the authority of the Texas Constitution.
  • I believe that the role of a judge is to apply the law.
  • I believe that a judge should never legislate from the bench.
  • I believe that the court should be efficient with all its resources and accessible to all its citizens.

I urge you to become involved today in this race to ensure that the people’s court belongs to you!

Sincerely,

Glenn Bass
